Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck

Philippe Patrick Starck (born January 18, 1949) is a well-known French designer and probably the best known designer in the New Design style. His designs range from spectacular interior designs to mass produced consumer goods such as toothbrushes, Philippe Starck Furniture and even houses.

Starck has worked independently as an interior designer and as a product designer since 1975. Most notably he has created a number of relatively inexpensive product designs for a large American retailer and Philippe Starck Furniture, many items manufactured by Kartell S.p.A.

Unlike most other New Design artists, Phillippe Starck Furniture work does not concentrate on the creation of provocative and expensive single pieces. Instead his product designs are of usable household items who Starck himself helps to market for mass production. His products are often stylized, streamlined and organic in their look and are also constructed using unusual combinations of materials (such as glass and stone, plastic and aluminum, plush fabric and chrome, etc.). Many of the Philippe Starck Furniture range is manufactured in polycarbonate.

Numerous pieces the Philippe Starck Furniture programme are manufactured by Kartell S.p.A These include:

Philippe Starck Eros

The ero/s is a swivel armchair with an organic egg shape, a refined combination of finishes and an adept use of colour. The quality and richness of its component materials, both for the body and the base, make it particularly elegant and sophisticated.

The Philippe Starck Furniture range includes the very popular Ghost family of chairs consisting of:

Philippe Starck Louis Ghost

A comfortable armchair in transparent and coloured polycarbonate in the Louis XV style: it is the quintessence of baroque revisited to dazzle, excite and captivate. This is the most popular of the Philippe Starck Furniture chairs.

Philippe Starck Victoria Ghost

This chair of classic lines whose rounded backrest recalls the shape of antique medallions, whilst the seat is linear and geometric.

Philippe Starck Charles Ghost

The shape conjures up stools of the 1800s and the lines of the legs is rounded and slightly upturned, an icon of the classic high stool.

Philippe Starck La Marie

The worlds first completely transparent chair, formed in a single polycarbonate mould. The start of the Philippe Starck Furniture range manufactured by Kartell S.p.A
